FOI Tactics for Thriving

It was a pleasure to speak at the Freedom of Information Police Network (FOIPN) Fall Conference this week in Oakville. The conference was also a very enjoyable opportunity to meet with clients and colleagues working in the police services.

My topic was FOI Tactics for Thriving in a World of Body-Worn Cameras, Next-Gen 911 and Other Rapid Change. Ontario’s police services face the challenge of applying freedom of information legislation enacted over thirty years ago in a world that now includes bodycam footage, dashboard cameras, electronic document management systems and next-generation 911. My presentation was intended to provide tips and tactics for institutions rising to meet this challenge, and to summarize some helpful recent decisions of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario.

The slides from my presentation are set out below.

I was also given the opportunity to speak about the FOI Assist software and introduce some of its newest features, including the ability to easily accept freedom of information requests online.

I want to express my thanks to the FOIPN conference committee for putting together such a wonderful event, to the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police for making it possible, and to the Halton Regional Police Service for hosting this year’s conference.

If you’d like to receive new FOI Assist Knowledge Base articles like this one as they are published, you can follow this site using the form below. Just enter your email address and then select “Follow FOI Assist”.

If you would like to learn more about how the FOI Assist software can help your institution track deadlines, respond to requests, prepare your annual report, and accept FOI requests online, I encourage you to book a demonstration today.

I look forward to hearing from you!
