New Features: Email Notifications and Time Tracking

I am pleased to announce that two frequently-requested features have just been added to the FOI Assist software: Email Notifications and Time Tracking.

Email Notifications

With the new Email Notifications feature, you can easily set up email notifications for request deadlines, “follow-up” dates and other events.

The system will then check each morning for any notifications to which you have subscribed. If any are applicable, you will receive an email containing a list of the specific requests to which each notification applies.

Currently, there are seven different email notifications available in the FOI Assist software:

If there are any other types of email notifications that you would like to see included in the FOI Assist software, please let me know.

Time Tracking

Additionally, the FOI Assist software now supports time tracking.

Time entries can be added and associated with particular requests, or as “general time” not associated with a specific file.

Each user can track their own time separately and a number of different reports can be generated. The system also allows institutions to download time reports as comma-separated value (CSV) files which can be opened in Excel, Google Sheets and other spreadsheet software. This enables you to prepare a wide variety of custom reports using the time information stored in the system.

I hope that institutions will find these two new features helpful in the management of their Freedom of Information programs.

The FOI Assist Software

As a subscription-based service, the FOI Assist software is always being revised and improved. It is kept up-to-date to reflect any changes to the legislation and guidance in Ontario. But what’s more, new features are constantly being added, both to improve the capabilities of the software and to improve client experience. And these updates and improvements are included in the price of your subscription.

I have created the FOI Assist™ software to help Ontario’s provincial and municipal government institutions of all sizes track and respond to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests. For most of my career I have been a lawyer, advising clients on commercial, intellectual property and FOI/privacy issues. From 2013 to 2015, I managed the FOI program for the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee while serving as Legal Counsel to the Games. Prior to becoming a lawyer, I obtained a computer science degree and worked as a software developer at several well-known technology companies.
