Reflecting on 2024

As the year draws to a close, we look back on a transformative 2024. For the Freedom of Information (FOI) community, it was a year of significant legislative updates, technological advances, and moments of collaboration that exemplified the core principles of transparency and public service.

Legislative and Policy Changes

2024 brought the enactment of new privacy breach response obligations under Bill 194, reshaping how provincial institutions handle compliance. The year also brought changes to the Information and Privacy Commissioner on Ontario’s appeal process, as well as new guidance to help institutions make informed decisions about privacy, confidentiality, and public safety in situations of intimate partner violence risk. FOI Assist was proud to support Ontario’s institutions with tools and resources tailored to help navigate these changes effectively.

Strength in Collaboration

The highlight of the year was the spirit of collaboration that defined our community. From the insights shared at the AMCTO 2024 Conference and the FOIPN Fall Conference to the release of University of Toronto’s Sunlight Project, this year demonstrated the power of working together.

At FOI Assist, we introduced various enhancements to the FOI Assist software, such as French/English bilingual support for all FOI correspondence, the ability to save draft letters as works in progress, and enhanced letter formatting with automatic inclusion of custom letterheads and footers, always guided by your feedback and needs.

Looking Ahead

As 2025 approaches, FOI Assist remains committed to providing innovative tools, training, and responsive support to help you excel. We’re excited about what’s ahead and look forward to continuing this journey with you.
