Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario Employees Vote to Unionize

In an interesting development announced last week, staff of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPCO) voted to unionize with AMAPCEO, the Association of Management, Administrative and Professional Crown Employees of Ontario.

The AMAPCEO news release is here: https://amapceo.on.ca/news/ipc-employees-vote-unionize-amapceo

According to the AMAPCEO announcement, “In the coming weeks, IPC employees will be officially welcomed into the union and will later begin the process of negotiating their first collective agreement, supported by AMAPCEO executive and staff.”

There does not yet appear to be any acknowledgement of the vote on the News Releases page on the IPCO website or the IPCO page on LinkedIn.

Questions that come to mind include: Who at IPCO will be a member of this union? (E.G., will Adjudicators and Assistant Commissioners be included?) And is it of any relevance that IPCO is an independent office of the Legislative Assembly, and not an agency of the Crown?

I will be watching this with interest.
